Address of Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov on the Day of official adoption of Islam in Volga Bulgaria

Dear citizens of Tatarstan! Dear compatriots!

I congratulate you on a fateful memorable date - the Day of official adoption of Islam in Volga Bulgaria. Eleven centuries ago Bulgar civilization was recognized as a part of great Muslim civilization. I am sure that for the last centuries the seeds of faith that were sowed in a fertile ground have come up and yielded rich spiritual fruits.

The adoption of Islam predetermined the development of our nation and its statehood. Distribution of hanafite maddhab had a positive impact on formation of scientific knowledge, strengthening of ethnic and religious diversity, national and international contacts.

A rich heritage left by Bulgar theologists was continued by outstanding Tatar educators and religious figures. On the same day, May 21, 2016 we are laying the foundation stone of the Bolgar Islamic Academy that is aimed to become one of the leading Muslim scientific and educational centers. The idea to establish the academy was supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin and reflects the desire for spiritual revival, distribution of true knowledge and traditional religious values.
