02.02.2015
Today, Tatarstan Parliament Speaker, Chairman of the Current Affairs Committee of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe Farid Mukhametshin takes part in the regular meeting of the Bureau of the Congress and the Chamber of Regions in Strasbourg. The agenda includes the issues of current situation in the world and discussion of regional policy in certain European states.
The meeting began with a minute of silence in memory of the tragic events in January in France, when terrorists shot the employees of satirical daily magazine “Charly” for publishing a caricature of the prophet Mohammed.
Members of the Bureau criticized strongly this “act of retaliation”, noting that terrorism can never be justified. The sides agreed to ensure multilateral intergovernmental cooperation to fight against terrorism.
In the near future, the Congress will consider counter-radicalization strategy at the local level, which is aimed at strengthening the work, especially in the European regions and municipalities. The Bureau members also reviewed the work conducted throughout 2014 and identified the issues for 2015-2017.
The Head of Tatarstan Parliament noted that “in connection with a difficult foreign policy situation, there are certain difficulties that we, as representatives of the Russian regions, are facing at the European Council. However, despite all difficulties it is very important today to continue the dialogue initiated at the European speaking platform where we can inform colleagues about our country's position in key areas”.
