Compulsory medical treatment prescribed for eight drug addicts in Tatarstan

On July 1, at a briefing on results of anti-drug month’s campaign that was held in Tatarstan on May 20 – June 26, Tatarstan Deputy Prosecutor, Senior Counsellor of Justice Sergei Starostin, Deputy Head of Federal Drug Control Services in Tatarstan Eduard Garaev, Acting Head of the Department for counternarcotic actions of Criminal Investigations Directorate of Tatarstan Ministry of the Interior Vadim Kostyunin, and Chief Doctor of Regional narcological dispensary Ilgiz Akhmetzyanov answered journalists’ questions.
Sergei Starostin told that 10, 000 events promoting life without drugs were held in the republic. More than 500, 000 people took part in the events.
Ministries and agencies that deal with drug-trafficking revelation and interdiction and prevention of drug addiction took part in preparation of the campaign “life without drugs”.
It was noted that 300 criminal cases connected with illegal drug purchase and storage were opened. Employees of State Road Traffic Inspectorate carried out work on drug traffic interdiction, 17 facts were revealed.
Commendation of the Federal Drug Control Services in Tatarstan was presented to volunteer of regional anti-drug project “Independent children” Alina Ukhatkina for active work and prevention of drug addiction in the sphere of formation of healthy lifestyle among adolescents and youngsters.
Eduard Garaev reminded that drug addicts will now be forced to have medical treatment. Certain amendments in the Code of Russian Federation on administrative violations came into force on May 25. In accordance with these amendments, courts are entitled to prescribe compulsory medical treatment and rehabilitation for drug addicts.
