Council of Europe discuss situation in Ukraine

Within the framework of the XXVI Plenary Session of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, members of the Congress continue discussing topics of the agenda, including the situation in Ukraine, thematic activities, youth participation, the crisis of confidence and urban mobilization. On March 25, Farid Mukhametshin chaired the meeting of the Current Affairs Committee of the Congress.
During the Bureau meeting Farid Mukhametshin discussed with the European colleagues the situation in Ukraine. He pointed to mass street protests against nationalists that took power in Ukraine in several regions and municipalities. “Some regions have gone even further taking decision on plebiscite in full accordance with the principles of the law of nations,” he said. He also reminded that the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol voted for the union with Russia by referendum.
According to the Chairman of the State Council of the Republic of Tatarstan, the international European community, which represents interests of peoples of their states, should not ignore the fact of free democratic vote of the citizens. On behalf of the Russian regions and municipalities, Farid Mukhametshin called upon the members of the Congress to take active part in stabilization of social and political situation in Ukraine. The Tatarstan Speaker suggested sending a group of observers – representatives of the Current Affairs, Monitoring and Governance committees – to Crimea to work out the position of the Congress and the Council of Europe.
On March 25, Farid Mukhametshin chaired the meeting of the Current Affairs Committee of the Congress. The Committee discussed important issues of local and regional level, including gypsies’ integration, intercultural dialogue, preventing children abuse and others. Members of the Committee also exchanged opinions on current projects and approved the program of future events.
