Rustam Minnikhanov and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia take part in a ceremony of laying of the foundation stone for the Resurrection Cathedral of the Naberezhnye Chelny Diocese

On 22 July the Rais (Head) of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, His Holiness the Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, who came on a 20-22 July visit to the republic, the Mayor of Naberezhnye Chelny Nail Magdeev and the Bishop of Naberezhnye Chelny and Yelabuga Gavriil took part in a ceremony of laying of the foundation stone for the Resurrection Cathedral of the Naberezhnye Chelny Diocese where the Patriarch consecrated the stone.

The establishment of the Naberezhnye Chelny Diocese last year opened a new page in the history in Orthodox life of Tatarstan and the leadership of the republic provides comprehensive assistance to its work.

It was said at the ceremony that today’s event is a historical milestone not only for Naberezhnye Chelny but for the whole republic as it is another symbol of a triumph of centuries-old traditions.

Construction of churches and mosques in Tatarstan where Orthodoxy and Muslims have been living side by side for centuries has become an example of integrity and prosperity.

Speaking at the ceremony, Rustam Minnikhanov said: “ Our joint participation in this ceremony is a confirmation of great importance of this event both for the Russian Orthodox Church and the multi-ethnic Tatarstan,” and thanked the Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia for his continuous participation in the spiritual life of the republic.

It is supposed that due to joint efforts the cathedral will become one of important tourist attractions of the city.
