On 6 June at their meeting on the sidelines of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, the Rais (Head) of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov and the Head of the Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport Andrey Tarasenko, who was appointed to this position in March this year, discussed development of speed passengers transportation by water transport in the republic and touched upon the topic of the necessity of development of a comprehensive programme on development of internal water ways in the country, which will connect regions.
Three main Russian rivers - the Volga, the Kama and the Vyatka-flow across Tatarstan, with the total length of water ways in the republic making 1 057 kilometers.
Participants of the meeting stated that there are a number of issues on development of inter-regional river transportation which need to be solved at the federal level, for example such as renovation of the docking facilities, supporting ship-builders and transport operators by subsidies, tax preferences and so on.
Rustam Minnikhanov supported a project of establishing a water hub proposed by Andrey Tarasenko and gave an errand to the Minister of Transport of the republic to discuss this issue with the agency.
