Speaking at a videoconference held by Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov with all municipalities of the republic with participation of the regional Prime Minister Aleksey Pesoshin, the Chief Sanitary Officer of the republic Marina Patyashina has reported that in the current year there is a substantial growth of the number of rodents and ticks in Tatarstan, the numbers of which increased by 1.5 times already in April. It has been specified that 25 per cent of rodents were infected with tularemia and hemorragic fever and 20 of ticks are infected with tick-borne encephalitis virus and Borrelia.
Patyashina informed that residents of the republic can get infected with hemmorage fever and Borrelia all over the republic and with tick-borne encephalitis at 30 municipalities and added that the main carriers of all these diseases are rodents and insects.
She also informed that there are only single cases of the tick-borne encephalitis , tularemia and leptospirosis in the region but the incidence of the hemmorage fever is four times higher than the average federal number and the republic ranks fifth in this regard in the Volga Federal district. She also stressed that people can get infected not only in the nature but also in the cities and large settlements where the presence of the rodents is caused by inadequate maintenance of basements and attics of the houses, trash enclosures and untimely trash pickup.
Patyashina said than the main measures to decrease the number of rodents and insects in nature are rat control and acaricide treatment and every year the republic allocates more than 30m roubles to treat more than 11 thousand hectares of the open areas.
She also reminded about individual preventive measures.
“This is a very serious issue. It is necessary to allocate additional finances and treat market areas and various neglected buildings. We should not forget about this matter”, Rustam Minnikhanov said.
