The open international contest was launched on July 23, 2021 and was initiated by Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov and the theater itself. The contest is held with the support of the Government of Tatarstan, the Ministry of Culture of the republic, the executive committee of Kazan and the Foundation “Institute for Urban Development of Tatarstan”. The operator of the Competition is the International Urban Laboratory "CENTER Lab".
The detailed information on the finalist projects is available on the contest’s website https://theatre.tatar/
Aide to Tatarstan President, Co-Chair of the expert council of the contest Natalia Fishman-Bekmambetova informed Minnikhanov about the project.
On October 12, 2021 in Kazan, the jury members considered applications from 26 consortia and 13 individual contestants from 14 countries and selected eight finalist teams.
Over the past four months, eight finalist teams have been working on the design project of a new theater building at the intersection of Khadi Taktash and Nursultan Nazarbayev streets, located on the bank of Kaban Lake. The architects tried to take into account all the points corresponding to the functional task: the number of rooms necessary to accommodate the theatre troupe, stages, the rehearsal rooms and the orchestra pit, additional training and performance rooms, as well as modern comfort requirements. The contestants took into account the urban landscape, the location of the main entrance to the theater, the appearance of the new building and many others.
The winner will be announced at a press conference on February 17, 2022.
