On March 2, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov sent a telegram of condolences over the death of outstanding scientist, Nobel laureate Zhores Alferov, who died today at the age of 89, to Acting Chairman of the St. Petersburg Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yulia Bublichenko.

“Dear Yulia Nikolaevna!

On my own behalf and on behalf of Tatarstan citizens, I express deep condolences over the death of Zhores Alferov.

Not only his family, relatives and friends, but the entire Russian public suffered a heavy, irreplaceable loss. An outstanding man and a brilliant scientist who made an invaluable contribution to world science and who was awarded the most prestigious professional awards passed away.

I met Zhores Alferov many times. He was an intelligent man, very enthusiastic, committed and totally devoted to science, standing up its enormous role in the development of the state. He lived a long, active, eventful life and left a priceless legacy: not only scientific papers, inventions and numerous students, but also the St. Petersburg National Research Academic University, the Foundation for the Support of Education and Science, as well as many other useful initiatives. He knew how to inspire other people and I am convinced that his work will continue, and that his colleagues will further develop all his initiatives.

Zhores Alferov will forever remain in our hearts as a bright, honest person, a man of principle. Please convey condolences from Tatarstan citizens to family members and friends of the great scientist.

Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov. "
