On August 8, Tatarstan Prime Minister Alexey Pesoshin paid a working visit to Volgograd to take part in a meeting on preservation, prevention of pollution and rational use of the Volga River held by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

Heads of 15 regions of the country, as well as federal ministries and agencies took part in the meeting.

"Special attention should be paid to the preservation of the unique system of the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain, additional watering of the Akhtuba River and the Volgograd Reservoir is required. In general, it is necessary to improve the throughput capacity of hydraulic structures. This work will require a systematic approach. The regions should work out their own projects aimed at preserving the Volga River," Medvedev said.

Governor of the Volgograd Region Andrey Bocharov made a report at the meeting. "The Volga River is the most important source of life activity and development for the Volgograd Region and its residents. Historically, a significant part of the population lives along the river,” Bocharov said, stressing that the problems of the lower reaches of the Volga and preserving the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain require special attention from all levels of government. One of the main tasks is to preserve unique natural sites, strike a balance, and reduce the negative impact on the ecosystem while developing the territories, he said in particular.
