Marat Akhmetov: The Strategy-2030 aims at producing 2 million tonnes of milk and 700,000 tonnes of meat, therefore breeding work needs to be intensified to accomplish this task

On March 18, speaking at a regional video-conference held by Prime Minister of Tatarstan Ildar Khalikov with participation of all municipalities, Minister of Agriculture and Food of the republic Marat Akhmetov reported on the state of breeding farms in Tatarstan.

He said that there are 83 breeding farms, including 18 breeding plants and 65 reproducers in the republic. The greater part of them, namely 62 breeding farms, including 15 breeding plants, are engaged in dairy cattle, while four breeding reproducers are involved in meat cattle.

Akhmetov added that there are three breeding farms in each of the following areas, including pig breeding, horse breeding, and fur farming. Moreover, there are two sheep and two poultry breeding farms.

He said that the share of cattle breeding stock makes 24 per cent in the republic (13 per cent in Russia), which accounts for almost 35 per cent of the annual volume of milk. The main part of this category of cattle is concentrated in the northern regions of the republic, which is reflected in the production of milk and the productivity of cows in these areas.

Akhmetov continued that for the last three years, nine breeding farms with a total livestock of about 9,000 heads have lost their status because they did not meet requirements or reorganized their enterprises. At the same time, there are new candidates for gaining the status of a breeding reproducer. This year there are eight such farms with a total livestock of 3,500 cows.

The level of sales of breeding products with high genetic characteristics is the main criterion for assessing a breeding farm and it should be no less than 10 per cent of the breeding stock, the Minister said.

Marat Akhmetov also briefly reported on the current situation concerning milk production in breeding farms.

He continued that the issue of breeding material in poultry farming and pig production is mainly related to national programmes for the development of these areas. So far, the country is largely dependent on imported breeding material.  In other areas, including horse breeding, sheep breeding, goat breeding and beekeeping, the work is carried out in accordance with the current legislation.

Summing up, Akhmetov emphasized that the Strategy-2030 aims at producing 2 million tonnes of milk and 700,000 tonnes of meat, therefore breeding work needs to be intensified to accomplish this task.
