On October 4, during his working visit to Kazan, Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Volga Federal District Igor Komarov accompanied by Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov got acquainted with the tourism potential of the republic.

Later on the same day, Komarov will hold a meeting of Council under Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Volga Federal District on the development of internal and inbound tourism.

Chairman of the regional State Committee on Tourism Sergey Ivanov reported on the development of the tourism industry in the republic. He said that today there are three sites inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List such as the Kazan Kremlin, the ancient city of Bolgar and the Assumption Cathedral of the island-town of Sviyazhsk in Tatarstan. “These are three dominant sites that determine the basis of the tourist flow to the republic,” Ivanov said.

He emphasized that large-scale work on the revival of Bolgar and Sviyazhsk started in 2010. The first President of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev runs the project. For nine years, tourists flow to Bolgar have increased 11 times, while to Sviyazhsk the figure has gone up 50 times. Every year, 500,000 tourists visit these sites.

“As for the total tourist flow to Tatarstan, it amounted to 3.4 million people last year. This year we expect about 3.7 million tourists. Our goal is to boost the figure up to 5 million tourists annually by 2025,” Ivanov said.

He continued to report on events and their impact on the development of tourist flow to the region, the development of the Tatarstan Tourist Pass mobile application for tourists, the development of the Great Volga Way Interregional tourist route and plans for organizing events as part of the 100th anniversary of the TASSR.
