Rustam Minnikhanov visits the Cu Chi Partisan Tunnels military-history complex in Ho Chi Minh

On November 19, during his working visit to Ho Chi Minh (the Socialist Republic of Vietnam), Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov accompanied by Consul General of the Russian Federation in Ho Chi Minh Alexey Popov and Aide to Tatarstan President Radik Gimatdinov visited the Cu Chi Partisan Tunnels military-history complex, which is one of the main tourist attractions of South Vietnam.

The history of the military park is connected with the Vietnamese struggle against the French colonialists in 1945-1954 and the American aggressors in 1964-1973.

While looking around the Cu Chi Partisan Tunnels, Minnikhanov and Popov laid a wreath at the memorial complex dedicated to the memory of Vietnamese soldiers who were killed during hostilities in 1945-1973.

Then, Tatarstan President got acquainted with the exposition of various kinds of small arms and visited one of the underground galleries.

In the late 1940's, Vietnamese resistance forces began to develop a multi-level network of underground tunnels in Cu Chi district, where military barracks, weapon caches, hospitals, military headquarters were located. The tunnels, a total length of which reached 200 km, allowed partisans to attack the enemy positions from hiding spots.

All the attempts of the American Expeditionary Forces and the Saigon army to destroy the Cu Chi base, including the creation of special units and the use of poison gas, failed.

The complex is considered to be a national and cultural-historical monument.
