On September 25, during his working visit to Tashkent, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov had a meeting with President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

Welcoming Minnikhanov in Uzbekistan, Mirziyoyev noted enhanced cooperation with Tatarstan and other Russian regions as part of the intergovernmental agreement on cooperation between regions of the two states signed during the visit of President of Uzbekistan to Russia in April this year.

He emphasized that warm relations with Tatarstan have been achieved by centuries-old cultural, historical and humanitarian ties between the two peoples.

The meeting discussed issues of further expansion of bilateral trade and economic cooperation. In particular, it was noted that there is great potential for increasing the volume of mutual trade between Uzbekistan and Tatarstan by four times in the next few years.

The meeting participants also outlined prospects for cooperation in priority areas, including the implementation of joint projects in the field of oil and gas chemistry, automotive industry, production of industrial equipment, medicine and pharmaceuticals, agribusiness, etc. Also, the need for closer interaction in such spheres as education, health-care, cultural exchange and tourism was mentioned at the meeting.

Minnikhanov expressed his sincere gratitude to Mirziyoyev for the warm welcome and confirmed that Tatarstan is ready to develop comprehensive partnership with Uzbekistan. He said that about ten different documents on cooperation between Tatarstan and Uzbekistan have been signed today.

At the end of the meeting, in an interview with journalists, Minnikhanov said that during the talks with President of Uzbekistan it was decided to sum up preliminary results of joint work on development of trade and economic interaction once a quarter. "In the short term, we must fill our agreements with concrete content and get down to business projects and joint deliveries," Tatarstan President concluded.
